Joy Sengupta is an Indian actor who works primarily in the Bengali and Hindi film industries. He made his feature film debut with the 1998 Bollywood drama Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa, and has since appeared in over 40 films in a career spanning close to two decades. Some of the actor’s best known works include 68 Pages (2007), Four Chapters (2008), the bollywood erotic thriller Hate Story (2012) and Teenkahon (2014). He is also a seasoned stage and television actor, and has appeared in shows like Waaris, Kucchh Pal Saath Tumhara and Antaral. Other significant film credits include Patalghar (2003), Sau Jhooth Ek Sach (2004), Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (2014) and the 2017 Bengali drama Bilu Rakkhosh. He was born in Kolkata and raised in Delhi. He was born on 14th December, 1974. He has always been attracted to art and culture and theater has been his first love. He started doing plays since college days. As an actor he always accepted artistic challenges and there was no turning back after that. He also loved teaching. He was associated with Jana Natya Manch in those days. Since he was known into the theatric circles, he received a few tele-film offers which he accepted. As television offered good exposure and payment, he opted for television roles. Yet he didn’t break his relationship with theater and also taught acting.

While he was busy with television, he happened to meet Govind Nihalani, who offered him the first film role – Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998. Later he worked in a few Bengali movies, apart from Bollywood films, theater work and television. Yet he feels theatre artists are always respected, as an actor gets a live reaction from the audience. He holds a Diploma in Drama from the Living Theatre Academy, New Delhi.
