During her struggling days, she used to get minuscule roles with less dialogue. She was neither credited nor given good remuneration for such roles, and thus never benefitted. Those roles didn’t help her to get an identity in the field. Yet well-determined Urmila wanted to achieve success in the industry. She joined Usha Ganguly’s theater troupe as an actress. Yet it didn’t help her too much. She started giving auditions.

Based on very little support and very high confidence, she came to Mumbai. However, the initial stage of struggle in Mumbai is not simple for anyone. These roles gave her a chance to show her acting ability, but she was still waiting for a break that would help her to build her identity in the television. Her dream was fulfilled when she finally got a break in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai(Star Plus), where her role of Rukmani got amazing response from the audience and TV fraternity and now Urmila was a known face at all households.

she is airing on Balika Vadhu as Phuli ki Saans, Diya aur Baati Hum as Dhaisaa and Shobha Somnath Kii as Hansa Behn. With all the above shows currently on air, Urmila Sharma is in each prime time show displaying her various shades of acting of a very high caliber.

She received a breakthrough role through the series, Sai baba and since then she started receiving character roles regularly. Yet she avoided less significant roles and accepted only good ones. Her roles in ‘Kalpana’ (DD), ‘Jeevan Saathi’ and ’Uttran’ (Colors), ‘Main Aisi Kyun Hoon’ (SaharaOne) etc placed her as a success actress of small screen. Billu barber – was her first break to Bollywood, where she played Lara Dutta’s neighbour.  She attended the auditions of Raanjhanaa and bagged the role of Dhanush’s mother with ease. In the auditions she was asked to create her own dialogues. Aanand L Rai’s movie gave her a big break to silver screen.
